Cologne is a two-bank city, and almost every job we run here crosses the Rhine at some point. Koelnmesse stands in Deutz on the right bank, the cathedral and the old town face it from the left, and the bridges in between are where the time goes on a tight schedule. Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) sits about 15 km southeast of the centre, normally 20 to 25 minutes on the A59, which makes it one of the easier German airports to build a programme around. We have been moving groups through the city since 2014.

Cologne routes, Koelnmesse and day trips along the Rhine
Koelnmesse drives most of our local demand. The halls in Deutz host gamescom in August, Anuga in the autumn and the January furniture and confectionery weeks, and each of them needs shuttle loops between the exhibition entrances and hotels on the far bank. The Lanxess Arena is a short walk from the same halls, which means concert and fair traffic can land on the same evening, and the stadium in Müngersdorf pulls match-day work out to the west of the city. Carnival is the other fixed point in the year: the days from Weiberfastnacht to Rosenmontag close large parts of the centre to traffic altogether, and any coach work in that week is planned around the parade routes rather than through them.
Cologne is a comfortable base for trips along the Rhine and into the west. Bonn is about 30 km south, roughly half an hour on the A555, and the conference centre and the former government quarter there are regular destinations in their own right. Düsseldorf is around 40 km north, Aachen about 70 km west on the A4, and Koblenz with the Middle Rhine valley some 90 km upstream. Brussels is roughly 220 km and about two and a half hours, and Amsterdam around 260 km, both of which work as day returns for a determined group or as the first leg of a longer tour. On multi-day routes we plan driver rest stops in advance so the schedule holds up under the EU driving-hours rules.
Planning coach access and busy-season bookings in Cologne
Coach access in Cologne comes down to two things: the green sticker and the bridges. The city operates an Umweltzone that covers the centre and requires a green badge, which our Euro VI coaches carry, so the zone itself is a formality for us rather than an obstacle. The Rhine crossings are the real planning problem. There are only a handful of them, they carry the whole city between the fair halls and the old town, and a fair morning or an incident on one bridge backs up the rest. We build that into the timings and agree with the driver in advance which crossing to use rather than deciding it in traffic. In the centre, the cathedral surroundings and the old-town lanes are closed to coaches, so set-down points go on the wider streets and hotel forecourts.
Demand in Cologne is shaped by the fair calendar and by Carnival. The big weeks at Koelnmesse fill vehicles and central parking at the same time as the hotels, and the Carnival days close streets across the centre, which changes not just the traffic but where a coach can legally stand. River cruise turnarounds at the Rhine quays run from spring through autumn and add a steady stream of airport transfers on top. Summer is the peak for Rhine valley and Eifel day trips, while conference and delegation work between Cologne and Bonn keeps weekdays busy for most of the year. Bus access & environmental zones in Cologne
Cologne operates an Umweltzone covering the city centre and a wide area around it, and vehicles need a green sticker to enter. Frequently asked questions
CGN is about 15 km southeast of the centre, so the run on the A59 usually takes 20 to 25 minutes, and hotels in Deutz are closer still. The airport also serves Bonn, which is around half an hour away in the other direction. We track flight arrival times, so the driver adjusts the pickup if your flight lands early or late.
Carnival week and the big Koelnmesse fairs are the tightest windows by a wide margin, and the river cruise season from spring to autumn keeps the quays busy in between. Vehicles, drivers and central parking all book out early for those dates, so groups travelling then do best to confirm well ahead.
Not immediately beside it. The area around the cathedral and the lanes of the Altstadt are pedestrian or heavily restricted, so a full-size coach cannot wait there. We agree set-down and pick-up points on the wider approaches and at hotel forecourts before the day, drop the group within a short walk of the Dom, and send the coach on to a legal waiting spot. For addresses in the old town itself a Sprinter minibus or a V-Class gets closer than a coach can.
