Riga is the practical base for group travel in the Baltics. It has the largest airport in the three countries, Riga International (RIX), which sits about 10 km southwest of the centre and is normally a 20 minute run, and it lies roughly halfway between Vilnius and Tallinn on the road that links them. A great deal of our work here is not Riga alone but Riga as the middle leg of a Baltic capitals tour. The city itself is compact: the Old Town, the Art Nouveau quarter and the main hotels sit within a short distance of each other on the right bank of the Daugava. We have been running coaches here since 2014.

Riga routes, the Baltic corridor and day trips from the city
Most itineraries here use Riga as a hub rather than a destination on its own. Tallinn is roughly 310 km north and Vilnius roughly 300 km south, each about four hours on the Baltic corridor, which makes the three capitals a natural multi-day route in either direction. Both borders are internal Schengen crossings, so there is nothing to stop for. Closer in, Jurmala and the Baltic beaches are only about 25 km west, half an hour door to door, and worth noting in the budget because vehicles pay a daily fee to enter the resort. Sigulda and the Gauja valley are around 50 km northeast for a comfortable day out, and Rundale Palace about 75 km south.
In the city, the work concentrates in a small area. The Old Town, the Freedom Monument, the cathedral and the market halls are all within walking distance of one another, which means a well-placed set-down point can cover a whole morning without the coach moving. The Art Nouveau streets north of the centre are the other fixed stop, and the cruise terminal sits on the Daugava right beside the Old Town, so ship days put a lot of coaches into a small space at the same hour. On multi-day routes we plan driver rest stops in advance so the schedule holds up under the EU driving-hours rules.
Planning coach access and seasonal bookings in Riga
Coach access in Riga is straightforward by western European standards, with one caveat. There is no emissions zone of the German or Italian kind to arrange, and the wide boulevards ringing the centre give a Tourismo room to work. What does restrict things is the Old Town itself: Vecriga is a limited-traffic area, its lanes are cobbled and narrow, and a full-size coach belongs at its edge rather than inside it. We agree set-down points on the surrounding streets and by the embankment, which puts the group within a few minutes of the cathedral and the main square. The other planning point is Jurmala, where every vehicle entering the resort pays a daily fee. We include that in the quote rather than leaving it as a surprise on the day.
Demand here is seasonal in a way that follows the Baltic climate. Summer is the peak: cruise calls, Baltic capital tours, incentive groups and weddings all concentrate between late spring and early autumn, and that is when vehicles need booking furthest ahead. Winter is quieter and mostly corporate and conference work, plus the Christmas market weeks in the Old Town. Winter tyres are a legal requirement from 1 December to 1 March, and our drivers are experienced on the long, exposed stretches of the corridor to Tallinn and Vilnius where conditions matter more than distance. Riga does not operate a green-badge emissions zone of the German type, so there is no sticker to arrange before a trip. The restriction that matters here is traffic access to the Old Town: Vecriga is a limited-traffic quarter of narrow cobbled lanes, and a full-size coach works its edges rather than its interior. We agree set-down and pick-up points on the surrounding boulevards and along the embankment, keep the waiting coach at a legal spot, and use a Sprinter minibus or a V-Class where an address inside the quarter genuinely needs a vehicle at the door. One local charge is worth knowing about: vehicles entering Jurmala pay a daily fee, which we include in the quote.

It is the largest airport in the Baltic states, which is why many Baltic tours start and finish here even when the itinerary covers all three countries.
